After publishing the original daily COVID-19 cases report on March 14, Johns Hopkins University changed the file format. This required us to publish an updated dataset with a new report, which you can access >here<.
Since the original solution was posted, I have received a tremendous amount of feedback, suggestions for enhancements and corrections. I introduced the tool in the earlier post. Members of the Microsoft MVP program have been a lot of help and several of my colleagues from Pragmatic Works have jumped in to add their insights and design support. We’re working on a Power BI app template that can installed into a Power BI tenant. In the interim, you can access the publicly accessible report through this link.
Using the report, we can track the daily progression of confirmed cases, recovered cases and deaths by country. Where available, these metrics are also available state or province and US counties.
The current project and future updates can be accessed using this GitHub repo.
There are now three different ways to access the COVID-19 Daily Updates Power BI dataset & report:
- Use this link to view the report published using Power BI “publish to web”
- Add the complete COVID-19 app to your Power BI tenant from Microsoft AppSource (see instructions below)
- Download the .PBIX file from this GitHub repository and make your own enhancements

I grabbed the latest .pbix from gitHub but it looks like it’s pointing to sandbox data, https://github.com/CSSEGISandData/COVID-19/tree/master/csse_covid_19_data/csse_covid_19_daily_reports.
What should it be pointing to?

Hi Paul,
I just installed the Covid-19 Global Daily Updates app version 15. I connected mydata using Anonymous/Public for both prompts but I’m not getting any data. Some of the dashboard tiles appear to have data through May 13 but the reports seem to have no data.
What could I be doing wrong?

More information. Disregard the previous post. It does not occur consistently.
After uninstalling and re-installing and selecting connect my data and selecting Anonymous/Public I continue to see the prompt of, “You’re viewing this app with sample data. Connect your data” in a pinkish banner at the top of the pages. Even after selecting Anonymous/Public during the install, the fields return to Anonymous/None every time I click “Connect your data” and change it to Anonymous/Public even though I get the confirmation pop-up indicating “Refreshing data”. The only place “Public” is retained is under Datasource / Settings / Data source credentials.
In all cases I’m not getting any data.
Any thoughts?

Yes. It was kind of a mess and took me two days to fix, but we still have to republish the template app.

Not sure if you’re aware, but there’s a free, granular version of the John Hopkins data set which is automatically updated daily available on Snowflake’s Data Exchange. Hi Paul, Would you mind commenting on the underlying data model as curious to know the reasoning why its predominantely a snowflake schema with bidirectional relationships … as opposed to a star schema. Thanks.
