The world of digital analytics seems to be insanely complicated. And, are we tracking people, devices, web browsers or whoknowswhat? I led a discussion the other day with a collection of people who were brand new to the space and some who were jaded long-term residents of Camp Web Analytics. And, yes, some of it is.

Do you have a sneaking, yet unshakable, suspicion that your Web Analtyics Vendor is sometimes just trying to mess with you? All web analytics tools have a smattering of metrics and key performance indicators that were created just because someone decided it would be cute to add / subtract / multiply / divide some numbers.

If you use Omniture's Site Catalyst or Google Analytics or whatever, they do a good job of collecting clean data into those two segments. So if you want to analyze Mobile performance then you want to compare Mobile and Desktop segments. You can analyze Mobile Search performance with Mobile Referring traffic information.

The term KPI is one that I hear far more than any other in this nascent field we call Web Analytics. Key Performance Indicators! Explain why, hopefully you'll have rules you can apply and check if your Web Metrics are indeed KPI's! Your Web Metrics: Super Lame or Super Awesome?
