We find ways to improve machine learning so that it requires orders of magnitude more data, e.g., deep learning with neural networks. My read of that narrative arc is that some truly weird tensions showed up circa 2001: Arguably, it’s the heyday of DW+BI. In short, the virtuous cycle is growing. It’s a mess.

In 2001, Bill Cleveland writes this article saying, “You are doing it wrong.” We actually got people to label a bunch of stories and say that they feel different feels, and then we used some deep learning models that would actually predict what feelings people would feel. We crowdsourced it.
