Ten years ago, achieving unicorn status was a major milestone. Today, there are more than 1,000, with Alation joining the unicorn herd in June 2021. Compare that to the 108 that earned the status in all of 2020 (and the 439 total up to 2019), and you can see why the title has lost its sparkle. Why are we seeing more unicorns?

Alation has raised $123M in Series E funding at a valuation of in excess of $1.7B, a material increase from the Series D round in June of last year, particularly in the context of the recent stock-market decline. Thoma Bravo was also impressed by the warm feedback Alation users gave to the customer success organization.
